Strong Regional Engagement Marked the Success of Two Webinars on Horizon Europe – Mediterranean Initiative II
The Horizon Europe – Mediterranean Initiative II witnessed an impressive milestone this week with the successful delivery of two webinars held on June 10 and 11, 2025. Organised to promote regional cooperation in research and innovation (R&I), the webinars attracted over 600 registered participants, with more than 250 active online attendees across both sessions.
The events kicked off with an opening address by Ms. Nienke Buisman, Head of Unit – Asia, Pacific, Africa & the Middle East, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission. Her remarks highlighted the growing importance of science diplomacy and cross-Mediterranean collaboration, and provided key insights into current EU policy developments in the region.
These webinars mark a significant step toward strengthening the EU-MED R&I partnership and serve as a strong foundation for future cooperation under Horizon Europe.

On June 10, a high-level event organized by the European Commission, the EU Delegation to Nigeria, Nigeria’s Federal Ministries of Science & Technology and Education, Nigeria’s Embassy to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU, and Nigeria’s Horizon Europe National Contact Points, in partnership with EURAXESS Africa, effectively unveiled new call topics under the Horizon Europe – Africa Initiative III.

On 19 June 2025, EURAXESS Africa and the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) Africa Office, co-facilitated a Workshop co-hosted by the European Commission (DG Research & Innovation), the EU Delegation to Rwanda and Rwanda’s Ministry of ICT and Innovation. This event was held as a side event alongside the 12th EDCTP3 Forum, which took place from June 15 to 20 in Kigali. The Workshop attracted over 250 registrations, which led to more than 100 participations on-site.
